What Is a Transmission Belt? Types & Uses

Xingtai Guanpin Rubber Products Co., Ltd. has been the leader in the manufacture of automotive transmission belts for more than 20 years. We have been developing our transmission belts expertise since 1997 when we were established as “Huayu Rubber Belt Factory”. Let's now see how we make these fundamental components.

What Exactly Is a Transmission Belt?

A transmission belt is a flexible loop of material which transmits rotation from at least one driving shaft to a driven shaft (or shafts). In automotive engine, transmission belts are usually utilized to transmit the power of crankshaft for the operation of critical component(s) of the engine. As one trade resource puts it, they convert the crank's rotation to power the different accessory components of an auto engine including an alternator, a power steering pump, an A/C compressor and more.

A good and stable transmission belt relies on the assembly and structure of the transmission belt. A transmission belt is an elastic part that is used to transfer power and also absorb impact and vibration. This damping action improves smoothness and quietness of the engine. Meanwhile, it can also be installed on the pulley to prevent the entire mechanical structure from being seriously affected or damaged in case of overload. In 26 years of production, Guanpin has accumulated all experience in developing and manufacturing dependable transmission belts.

The Classic Powerhouse: V-Belts

The V-belt is one of the oldest and most efficient types of power transmission available for automobile vehicles. The belt is named for its cross sectional of the belt i.e. Trapezoidal shape—a trapezoid with a wide top that tapers to a narrow bottom, forming a "V" that fits precisely into the pulley groove.

This shape provides maximum grip, strength and noise free operation. The V-belt also provides some amount of slip which makes it useful for automobile accessories like air condition compressor which otherwise turn on and off at regular interval. We at Guanpin produce V-belts from specially adopted materials and formula to have great impact resistance with long life, unique straight-edge structure prevents the tension line from abrasion. The Wrapped V-belt is one of the standard cross-section in our V-belt range.

The Versatile Solution: PK/Multi-Ribbed Belts

With engine bays becoming more complicated and a task for one belt to handle more efficiently, the industry was switched over to the PK or Poly-V belt. This type of belt is often called by the name serpentine which refers to the fact that this belt has multiple long face ribs on its inner surface, which makes for a larger rubbing surface area than a normal V-belt. This structure makes for the belt to transfer up to 30% more power in a smaller space than normal V-belt.

Multi-ribbed belts are narrower and more flexible than their V-belt equivalents, which makes them a very good choice for high-speed transmission, and large and small diameter pulleys . They generate less heat in operation, which extends the lifespan, and enhances the reliability of a multi-ribbed belt. Here at Guanpin, our PK belts are made with the most durable engineered rubber materials such as EPDM. We provide a wide variety of customization options, including product color, rubber compounds, and cord material, to meet any customer's specific requirements.

Precision Engineering: Timing Belts (Toothed Belts)

Unlike V-belts and PK belts, which are responsible for driving external accessories, the timing belt plays a far more critical and precise role: synchronizing the engine's internal components. A timing belt is a flat belt with molded teeth that mesh with the teeth on the crankshaft and camshaft gears. This failure of a timing belt can cause catastrophic engine failure, making this component extremely critical.

The failure of a timing belt can cause an engine of disastrous failure so this parts can be seen to be extremely important. The timing belts are stiffer and tougher than accessory belts and typically has a spring tensioner or automatic hydraulic system to force the belt to grip to avoid any slippage. With over 20 years of experience Guanpin offers the best quality timing belts which meet a high standard of durability as well as accuracy. Guanpin is perfectly aware of the significance of the timing belt and so can use all our know how in order to offer the opportunity for the clients to process their own trademarks, licensed logo and brand - but access their own durable timing belt.
